Watch Holly's Circle Garden Grow

Compare 2009 garden growth to 2010. Every other photo compares the 2 years side by side. So far The 2010 yr. is over 3 weeks ahead of 2009. This is a roundish garden patch in the middle of my front yard. I did this so we can enjoy it from our…

It's important to know if you're getting an Annual, Biennial or Perennial

When you find a plant you are interested in be sure to find out if it is an Annual, Biennial or Perennial because that will help you determine how to care for it and where to locate it. See previous Blog posts of August 2009 for definitions of these 3 different types of plants.

Limit your walks on garden soil

While you may enjoy taking walks around your garden, don’t get in the habit of walking through it. Walking in your garden compacts the soil. This pushes the air pockets out of the dirt which could suffocate your plants. It also makes it hard for the roots to get through the soil. Reserve walking through the garden only on weeding and maintenance days.

Take garden photos in spring

Make written notes & take photos of your gardens in spring of where you will want to plant spring flowering bulbs this coming FALL. Why? Because by fall your yard will look completely different. In the spring you can note where your ‘bare’ spots are & where you’d like to see some color.

Gloves are a must

Buy several pairs of gloves. Light weight, heavy weight and waterproof ones all have their place in your supply basket. They will save your hands from thorns, bug bites, dirt and more.

Get some overalls....

If you are really interested in becoming a flower and/or vegetable gardener, you must invest in some denim overalls and for warmer temperatures some ‘short’ overalls. The pockets are invaluable to carry clippers, gloves, seed packets, hand weeding tools, tissues, headbands, etc. This ‘carry all’ outfit will save you many trips back & forth to the shed. (You’ll even find that overalls are comfortable to wear)

This is Holly. Keeping track of all plants and seeds I buy or receive is most important to me. Especially if there is a guarantee to go with it. If the plant does not survive I want to be able to find the receipt & info on it to get a speedy…

It seems to have been cool summer everywhere. HOW DID YOUR GARDENS DO?

In northern Michigan we had a very cold & snowy 2008-09 winter which went into a very cool spring that evolved into a very odd summer. Our nights were cool ALL summer - in the 40's & 50's consistently. We only got into the 80 degrees about 4 days!! Day temps hardly got out of the low 70's. Results: stunted plants. My hardy hibiscus were 2' shorter & bloomed 6 weeks late - actually so late most of the blooms got froze in an early October frost. Only had about 10 blooms make it out of…See More

Green Tomato Recipes

With the cooler summer here in Michigan this 2009 year, many may have a lot of green tomatoes to use up. Here's the Green Tomato Pie recipe that my Grandma & Mom did.

Make up some regular pie crust - for a top & bottom. For the filling -

- thinly slice up 6 or 8 small green tomatoes and

- thinly slice up a lemon (take out seeds)

Crumble together

- 1 c brown sugar

- 1/4 c white… Continue
